UL 508A & UL698A Certifications

UL 508A – Standard for Industrial Control Panels

  • Scope – Covers general-purpose industrial control panels.
  • Environment – For use in non-hazardous (ordinary) locations.

  • Hazard Protection – Not specifically designed for explosive atmospheres.

  • Typical Applications – Factories, processing facilities, and commercial environments without flammable gases or vapors.

  • Design Requirements – Focuses on safety related to electrical wiring, component selection, short-circuit current ratings (SCCR), and proper labeling.

UL 698A – Industrial Control Panels Relating to Hazardous (Classified) Locations

  • Scope – Applies to control panels installed outside the hazardous area but controlling equipment inside classified hazardous locations.

  • Environment – Supports use in hazardous (classified) locations, such as those with flammable gases, vapors, or dust.

  • Hazard Protection – Ensures that the panel interfaces safely with intrinsically safe (IS) or explosion-proof equipment in Class I, II, or III Divisions 1 or 2 areas.

  • Typical Applications – Oil refineries, chemical plants, grain elevators, or any facility with combustible atmospheres.

  • Design Requirements – Includes all UL 508A rules plus additional requirements for:

    • Intrinsically safe circuit interfaces

    • Isolation barriers

    • Special wiring and grounding methods

    • Documentation and verification procedures for IS circuits
